PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

The Present Continuous Tense is used to describe

  1. The actions that are continuous or progressive at the time of speaking

The boys are watching a movie.

Renu is making a garland for the idol of Lord Shiva.

We are preparing for the competition.

2. For the actions going to happen in the near future

PM Modi is going to China next week.

Sampat and I are starting a new business in partnership.

3. The present continuous can also be used when an action has started but hasn’t finished yet.

Example:

  • am reading a book; it’s a nice book.

(It means = I am not necessarily reading it; I started reading it but I haven’t finished it yet

In Continuous Tense, time may come in a sentence but the starting time of action should not be there.

If the starting time of the action is given and action still continues, the Continuous Tense becomes Perfect Continuous Tense

e.g. He has been studying in a Government school for the last three years.

In this sentence, the starting time of the action ‘studying – for the last three years’ is given and action is continuous hence it has become Present Perfect Continuous Tense. If we remove continuous time “for the last three years” from the sentence, it will become a sentence of Present Continuous Tense.- Examples:

Ram is reading the paper. – (Present continuous tense)
Ram is reading the paper for the last two hours. – (Present perfect continuous tense. ( as the specified time of two hours is used.)

Special Verbs

There are verbs which are normally not used in the present continuous tense because the action of these words automatically gets done.

कुछ वर्ब का प्रयोग सामान्य स्थिति में प्रेज़न्ट कन्टीन्युअस टेन्स में नही किया जाता है – जैसे – See, Hear, Smell, Taste, Feel । इन शब्दों की क्रिया अपने-आप स्वतः ही होती है – जैसे – See (देखना) आंखों से स्वतः ही होता है ।

Examples:

be, believe, belong, hate, hear, like, love, mean, prefer, remain, realize, see, seem, smell, think, understand, want, wish

It’s not correct to say:

He is wanting to buy a new car.*

You must say:

He wants to buy a new car.

When these words are used for a particular thing, then these are used in Continuous Tense.

जहां इनका प्रयोग किसी विशेष उद्देश्य हेतु किया जाता है तो उनको कंटिन्युअस टेन्स में प्रयोग करते हैं ।

Passive Voice of Present Continuous Tense

Rules of Active and Passive voice (mentioned below) shows that helping verb ‘Is/Are/Am + Being’ is used with 3rd form of verb for making Passive Voice of Present Continuous Tense.

Helping Verb in Passive Voice is used as per the Subject of the Passive Voice (Object of Active voice which becomes Subject of Passive Voice). If the Subject of Passive Voice is plural, Helping Verb of plurals will be used irrespective of the fact that in Active Voice, the subject was Singular.

In case of Negative sentence, ‘Not + Being’ is added after helping verbs and in case of Interrogative sentence helping verb comes in the starting of the sentence and place of ‘Being’ remains before Verb (3rd form)

In all types of sentences – Positive, Negative u0026amp; Interrogative, 3rd form of verb is used in Passive Voice.
